Desktop applications​

macOS​

System requirements:

  • macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later
  • Apple Silicon or Intel processor
  • 100 MB available space

Download options:

  • Universal (Apple Silicon + Intel): Recommended
  • Apple Silicon only
  • Intel only
macOS installation

After downloading, open the .dmg file and drag Linear to your Applications folder. On first launch, you'll need to grant screen recording permission in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.

Windows​

System requirements:

  • Windows 10 or later
  • DirectX 11 compatible graphics
  • 100 MB available space

Download options:

  • Installer (.exe): Recommended
  • Portable version (.zip): No installation required

Browser extensions​

Chrome​

Install from the Chrome Web Store. Works on:

  • Chrome 88 or later
  • Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave, etc.)

Features:

  • Measure web page content
  • Element dimension detection
  • Grid overlay on web pages
  • Works with web-based design tools (Figma web, etc.)

Firefox​

Install from Firefox Add-ons. Works on:

  • Firefox 78 or later
  • Firefox Developer Edition

Features:

  • Same as Chrome extension

Note: The desktop app can measure anything on screen, including browser content. The browser extension only works within web pages but provides better element detection.

Installation guidance​

macOS specific​

  1. Download the .dmg file
  2. Open the downloaded file
  3. Drag Linear to Applications
  4. Launch Linear
  5. When prompted, grant screen recording permission:
    • Open System Preferences
    • Go to Security & Privacy > Privacy > Screen Recording
    • Check the box next to Linear
    • Restart Linear if needed

Windows specific​

  1. Download the installer
  2. Run the .exe file
  3. Follow installation prompts (default location recommended)
  4. Launch from Start menu

For portable version:

  1. Download the .zip file
  2. Extract to your preferred location
  3. Run Linear.exe from the extracted folder

Browser extensions​

  1. Visit the extension store (Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons)
  2. Click "Add to Chrome" or "Add to Firefox"
  3. Confirm permissions
  4. Linear icon appears in your toolbar

Verifying your download​

All downloads are signed and verified:

macOS: App is notarized by Apple. If you see a security warning, it may be from an outdated macOS version. Contact support.

Windows: Installer is signed with our code signing certificate. Windows SmartScreen may show a warning on first run—this is normal for less common applications.

Checksums: Available on the download page for verification.

Updating Linear​

Desktop apps​

  • Check for updates: Help > Check for Updates
  • Auto-update enabled by default
  • Manual download always available from this page

Browser extensions​

  • Updates automatically through browser extension system
  • Check extension settings to verify auto-update is enabled

Uninstalling​

macOS​

  1. Quit Linear
  2. Drag Linear from Applications to Trash
  3. Empty Trash
  4. Optionally remove preferences: ~/Library/Preferences/com.theuxshop.linear.plist

Windows​

  1. Open Settings > Apps
  2. Find Linear
  3. Click Uninstall
  4. Follow prompts

Browser​

  1. Right-click the Linear icon in toolbar
  2. Select "Remove from Chrome/Firefox"
  3. Confirm removal

Previous versions​

If you need an older version for compatibility reasons, email hello@theuxshop.com with your requirement. We maintain archives of recent major versions.

Troubleshooting downloads​

Download won't start:

  • Try a different browser
  • Check your firewall/security software
  • Try the alternate download link (provided on download page)

File appears corrupted:

  • Re-download the file
  • Verify checksum matches
  • Try portable version (Windows)

Installation fails:

  • Ensure you have admin rights (Windows)
  • Check available disk space
  • Try running installer as administrator
